Sunday July, 20, 2014: Hindrances part 4

This week we will continue our exploration of the hindrances with #3 & 4:

  1. Grasping/clinging/attachment: a consuming want of things you don’t have or an obsessive need to keep the things you do have.
  2. Aversion/rejection/anger/fear: a consuming want for things you have to be different than how they are or an obsessive resistance to getting things you do not want.
  3. Restlessness/anxiety: too much energy in the mind-body-heart. Often characterized psychologically by obsessive thinking and physically as inability to find stillness. It can also manifest as a superficiality or taking on so much in your life.
  4. Sloth & torpor/laziness & sleepiness: not enough energy in the mind-body-heart. Often underpinned by boredom. It manifests as a turning away or avoidance of what is happening. It can also manifest as a compulsion to be comfortable all the time.

Please continue to work with recognizing the first two hindrances in your life. Remember Sharon’s teacher’s suggestion: when clinging/grasping/attachment or aversion/anger/fear come to visit, ask the question, “What IS anger?” “What is this clinging I feel?” Remember also that the forces of attachment and aversion in and of themselves are not problematic as long as we hold them in the space of mindfulness. It is only when they consume us to some extent that they become hindrances.

Sunday, July 13, 2014: Hindrances Part II

We’ll continue on last week’s conversations with the hindrances this coming Sunday. So while there’s no video for you to watch in advance – you can still use the opportunity to consider the arising of hindrances in your life! Specifically, as we were discussing #1, look at resisting desire. Pick out one of your guilty pleasures, or something you desire frequently and pause when it arises. See what it feels like to crave something… what does “Craving” really feel like? Wait awhile before having what it was you desired, in so far as giving yourself the opportunity to really work with it!

Recall, the 5 are:

  1. Clinging (/Craving/Desire for sensory experience)
  2. Aversion (/Ill-will/Resistance)
  3. Sloth and Topor
  4. Restlessness
  5. Doubt

See you Sunday!

Sunday, July 6, 2014: The Hindrances, Part 1

This coming Sunday we’re going to kick off a mini-series on the Hindrances. We aren’t going to post it in advance… simply because it isn’t freely available online! They’re nice and short (7-12 min video per hindrance)  so we’ll see how things go, might get through 1 & 2 this week!

If you’d like a little primer… Wikipedia as always has some thoughts on the topic.

Also, we’re going to have our summer BBQ in a few weeks (*stay tuned*) please let us know next time you see us if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions or preferences.
