This week we will continue our exploration of the hindrances with #3 & 4:
- Grasping/clinging/attachment: a consuming want of things you don’t have or an obsessive need to keep the things you do have.
- Aversion/rejection/anger/fear: a consuming want for things you have to be different than how they are or an obsessive resistance to getting things you do not want.
- Restlessness/anxiety: too much energy in the mind-body-heart. Often characterized psychologically by obsessive thinking and physically as inability to find stillness. It can also manifest as a superficiality or taking on so much in your life.
- Sloth & torpor/laziness & sleepiness: not enough energy in the mind-body-heart. Often underpinned by boredom. It manifests as a turning away or avoidance of what is happening. It can also manifest as a compulsion to be comfortable all the time.
Please continue to work with recognizing the first two hindrances in your life. Remember Sharon’s teacher’s suggestion: when clinging/grasping/attachment or aversion/anger/fear come to visit, ask the question, “What IS anger?” “What is this clinging I feel?” Remember also that the forces of attachment and aversion in and of themselves are not problematic as long as we hold them in the space of mindfulness. It is only when they consume us to some extent that they become hindrances.
